Into the vines at Ediger-Eller

This two-hour tour takes you into the vineyards above Ediger-Eller, a wine village upriver from Cochem at the foot of the Calmont, and ends with a tasting of the local wines. There's no boat in it: pick it if you want a close look at the slopes the boats only pass.

Ediger-Eller Wine Tasting & Vineyard Walk

About this experience

Ediger-Eller is two villages joined into one, with around 900 people, Riesling on the slopes and streets of half-timbered houses from the 16th and 17th centuries. Ediger still has stretches of a town wall first mentioned in 1459. Eller sits under the Calmont, whose vineyards count among the steepest in the world.

The tour is simple: two hours, a guided walk through the vineyards and a tasting of the wines grown there, from $32. It's the cheapest wine experience on this site and a good counterweight to the boat days, where the wine comes in a glass on deck and the vines stay at a distance.

There's no boat in the package, and the train is the easy way to get there. Ediger-Eller station sits at the far end of the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Tunnel, 4,205 m under the hills from Cochem, so the ride takes minutes instead of the long way round the bends. Check the meeting point on your voucher before you set off.

  • Two hours in the vineyards with a guide

Tips before you book

  • Take the train, not the car: through the tunnel it's a short hop from Cochem, and you'll be tasting.
  • Wear shoes with grip for the vineyard paths.
  • Make a day of it: the Moselsteig trail runs from Ediger-Eller to Beilstein, and from Beilstein the Kolb boat goes back to Cochem through the Fankel lock. Check the last boat first.
  • Ediger-Eller holds its Pfingstweintage wine festival over the Whitsun weekend.
