KD or Kolb in Cochem?

Two companies run near-identical one-hour cruises from piers a few hundred metres apart. The differences are small but real: language, Mondays, a hop-off in Ernst, and what you can do next.

Walk along the Moselpromenade in Cochem and two names compete for your fare. KD, the Cologne river line, runs a one-hour panoramic cruise and a summer evening cruise. Kolb, a Moselle family firm, runs a one-hour loop of its own plus everything longer: Beilstein, Treis, Traben-Trarbach and the evening music boats.

For a one-hour trip the choice comes down to commentary language, the day of the week and whether you want to step off in Ernst. For anything longer, there's no choice at all.

The quick answer

Pick KD for commentary in English as well as German, family fares and a boat that leaves from its own ticket office. Pick Kolb on a Monday, after mid-October, if you want to hop off in Ernst, or for any trip longer than an hour. Both charge about €14 at the pier and from $16 online.

What is the difference between KD and Kolb in Cochem?

KD offers one-hour and evening cruises with German and English commentary, Tuesday to Sunday in season. Kolb sails daily, adds the Ernst stop and runs every longer trip from Cochem.

Which Cochem boat has English commentary?

KD. Its one-hour panoramic cruise has loudspeaker commentary in German and English. Kolb's one-hour loop commentary is in German.

KD describes the commentary as landscape explanations in German and English by announcement. It is a recorded-style voice over the PA, not a live guide, and on the open top deck the wind takes some of it.

Is it worth choosing on language alone? For first-time visitors, yes. The castle, the Brauselay cliff and Ebernach monastery go past quickly, and a sentence of context helps. If you just want the view and the breeze, take whichever boat leaves next.

Both one-hour cruises pass under the Reichsburg. Only KD explains it in English.

Where do KD and Kolb boats leave from in Cochem?

KD boards in front of its ticket office on the Moselpromenade. Kolb's one-hour loop boards at the yellow "Rundfahrten" pier below the old Moselle bridge.

The Kolb listing places its pier between the car park and the giant chess board, below the Skagerrak bridge, which locals call the old bridge. Kolb also sells at its own agency on the promenade and at the "Rundfahrten UNDINE" agency below the bridge. KD's office carries the red, blue and white KD logo.

The walk between them is a few minutes. Arrive 15 minutes early either way and check the name on your ticket before you queue.

Do the one-hour routes differ?

Only slightly. Both pass the old town and the Reichsburg; Kolb goes downstream first, then upriver past the Brauselay to Valwig and Ernst.

Kolb spells its route out: from the old bridge downstream toward the leisure centre, then upstream past the Reichsburg, the Brauselay rock, Ebernach monastery and the wine villages of Valwig and Ernst. KD publishes its loop only as a map, but the water is the same stretch. In an hour, neither gets far enough upriver to reach a lock.

The real difference is Ernst. Kolb lets you leave the boat there and come back on a later one; return boats leave Ernst at 11:30, 13:00, 14:30 and 15:30 on the 2026 timetable. That turns a one-hour loop into a half day with a tasting in a wine village.

Which company sails on Mondays and late in the year?

Kolb. KD's panoramic cruise runs Tuesday to Sunday and its 2026 season ended on 18 October; Kolb sails daily to 31 October and at weekends in November.

KD's 2027 season runs 27 March to 17 October, Tuesday to Sunday, at 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 15:00, 16:30 and 18:00. Kolb's loop runs daily from late April to 31 October at 11:00, 12:30, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:45, and in November on Saturdays and Sundays. In a late-October dusk, skip the 17:45; you'll see more from the 15:00.

Mondays are the quietest day on the river in general. If you're in Cochem on one, the Kolb boats are the ones running.

Who runs the longer trips from Cochem?

Kolb, almost entirely. The lock cruise to Beilstein, the Treis trips, the Traben-Trarbach day and the evening music cruises are all Kolb boats.

Kolb started in 1921 with one motorboat and opened a Cochem to Beilstein line in 1924; today it runs 28 passenger boats up and down the Moselle. KD's Cochem programme is the panoramic hour, a two-hour evening lounge cruise with a DJ, and one-off events such as a fireworks cruise on Cochem's wine festival weekend.
