A Moselle wine cruise from Cochem

Search for a wine cruise in Cochem and you'll find plenty of wine and plenty of boats. What you won't find is a tasting held on deck. Here is what actually exists, and how to put together a better day yourself.

Booking choice: The Beilstein wine day, from $100 per person. Check dates Tour details

No regular Cochem boat runs a guided wine tasting on board. Kolb's full trip list has round trips, lock cruises, day trips and party nights, but no tasting cruise, and the tourist office's boat page lists none either. You can buy a glass of Moselle wine on any of the boats.

The wine cruises sold online are packages: a boat trip plus a tasting in a cellar ashore, sometimes with a castle tour, a meal or a vineyard walk. They are good days out. Just know what you are buying.

The quick answer

The closest thing to a wine cruise is the Beilstein wine day (6.5 hours, from $100): boat to Beilstein, three wines and Flammkuchen in a historic cellar, boat back, three liqueurs in Cochem. The castle, boat and wine day is from $84. On a budget, take Kolb's hour-long loop, step off in Ernst and taste at a wine estate for well under half that.

A glass on deck is easy. A guided tasting means stepping ashore.

Is there a wine tasting cruise from Cochem?

Not on board. Every regular boat sells wine, but the tastings on offer take place in cellars ashore, with the boat as transport between them.

Kolb's boats have galleys selling wine, coffee and snacks, and KD sells drinks on its panoramic and evening cruises. None of them pours a guided flight of wines. For that, the packages below combine a boat ride with a tasting in Beilstein, Cochem or a nearby village.

Our view: that is no bad thing. A cellar is a better place to taste than a vibrating deck, and the walk between the two is part of the day.

Which wine and boat tours run from Cochem?

Five, from a two-hour vineyard walk to a 6.5-hour boat day to Beilstein. Prices online run from $32 to $111.

The first two are run by a local agency, Reiseservice Siweris, and are self-guided once you hold the vouchers. Details on the wagon ride and the wine hike are thinner; read each listing for the meal, the route and the cancellation terms before booking.

What does the Beilstein wine day include?

Boat from Cochem to Beilstein, three wines with Flammkuchen in a historic cellar, the boat back, then three liqueurs in Cochem and a 0.2-litre bottle to take home.

The listing describes a self-guided day: there is no guide, you swap your voucher for boat tickets at the third ticket counter from the old Moselle bridge, and the host at the tasting speaks German. It is not suited to wheelchair users. On the way up the boat passes the Fankel lock, like every boat to Beilstein.

Bought separately, the boat alone is €20 at the kiosk. The package adds the food, six drinks and the bottle, and saves you finding a cellar on your own.

The tasting happens underground in Beilstein, not on deck.

What about the castle, boat and wine tour?

A guided Reichsburg tour in the morning, a boat trip around noon and a four-wine tasting plate with a bottle to take home. It starts at the castle, Schlossstrasse 36.

Two practical points from the listing. The day starts up at the castle, and the shuttle bus from Endertplatz is not included; the walk up takes 15 to 30 minutes (Reichsburg). The listing is also unclear on whether a guide stays with you after the castle, so expect to find your own way between the parts.

It suits a first-time visitor who wants the castle, the river and a tasting without planning anything. If you're happy to plan, the castle (€10 for adults), a one-hour boat (€14) and a tasting in town cost less.

How do you make your own wine cruise from Cochem?

Take Kolb's one-hour loop, step off in Ernst, taste at a wine estate in the village and catch a later boat back. It costs the boat fare plus whatever you drink.

Ernst is a wine village a short way upriver. Kolb's one-hour round trip lets you leave the boat there, and the 2026 timetable has boats back to Cochem from Ernst at 11:30, 13:00, 14:30 and 15:30. The Ernst stop doesn't run in winter.

Longer version: the lock cruise to Beilstein, lunch and a glass in the village, the 15:00 boat back. Or ride Kolb's afternoon line upriver toward Ediger and Zell, which passes some of the steepest vineyards on the Moselle. The long trips guide has the times.

Are there evening wine cruises in Cochem?

Yes, in summer. KD runs a two-hour lounge cruise with a DJ, and Kolb runs live-music boats on Friday and Saturday nights from May to October. Wine is sold on both.

For the festival calendar on the river, see Moselle wine festivals by boat.

Can you bring your own wine on a Cochem boat?

Not on KD: its listing rules out outside food and drink. Kolb sells drinks in every galley, so plan to buy on board.

Kolb's Q&A says every boat has a galley with hot and cold drinks and most sell snacks; full meals can be arranged with advance notice. A glass of local wine on the top deck, with the slopes it came from sliding past, is the simplest wine cruise there is.

Two hours on deck at dusk, music and a glass of Moselle wine as the castle lights come on.
